Building Information Modelling in Northern Ireland

What is BIM?

Building Information Modelling (BIM): What is it and how can it benefit my project?

Building Information Modelling (BIM) is a way of working underpinned by digital technologies which allows for more efficient methods of designing, creating, and maintaining construction projects. BIM technology should be seen as an amalgamation between the construction sector and software industries, allowing key assets and component data to be integrated in to a 3 dimensional computer model which can be used for effective project management throughout the construction project life-cycle.
“BIM is the first truly global digital construction technology and will soon be deployed in every country in the world. It is a ‘game changer’ and we need to recognise that it is here to stay.” – Patrick MacLeamy – Chief Executive Officer of HOK
BIM offers various advantages for facility management and asset information including;
  • 3 dimensional design and project coordination
  • Common data environment
  • Maintenance of project assets
  • Allowing analyses, extraction, interrogation of the model
  • Testing models and managing risk around projects
